The Truth About Buying Hair Products from Off-Price Retailers

Writer: Brooklyn ArizaBrooklyn Ariza

Listen, I love TJ Maxx and Marshalls. Honestly, you’ll catch me there finding all kinds of trinkets to decorate the salon with. If you know me, then you know that I love a bargain. However, when it comes to purchasing salon hair products from these retailers, there are some risks to consider.

How Off-Price Retailers Operate

Stores like TJ Maxx and Marshalls specialize in reselling items from department stores, discontinued products from manufacturers, and closeout deals. While this model works well for clothing, home goods, and décor, it’s a different story when it comes to professional hair products.

The Risk of Expired Products

Salon-quality hair products have expiration dates. If you check the back of your bottles, you’ll see a small jar icon with a number followed by an "M." This indicates how many months the product remains effective after production.

By the time these products make their way through the off-price retail cycle—being manufactured, stocked at their original seller, removed from shelves, processed for resale, and then placed on discount retailer shelves—they are often close to or past their expiration date.

Why Expired Products Are a Problem

Using expired hair products can cause:

  • Reduced effectiveness – Ingredients break down, making the product less effective.

  • Scalp irritation and dryness – Expired formulas can cause itchiness or discomfort.

  • Bacterial contamination – Over time, bacteria can grow, leading to potential scalp issues.

  • Damage to hair health – Weakened formulas may strip or dry out your hair.

  • Seborrheic dermatitis risk – Some expired ingredients can contribute to scalp conditions.

Where Should You Buy Hair Products?

To ensure the integrity and effectiveness of your hair products, I highly recommend purchasing directly from a licensed salon professional or the manufacturer’s authorized retailers. This guarantees that your products are fresh, safe, and formulated to give you the best results.

I’m all for a great deal, but when it comes to hair care, quality and safety should always come first! Have questions about where to find the right products? Feel free to reach out—I’m happy to help!
